Excellent Article On Going Back To School Care For Women.

I had so many struggles and encountered too many negative forces when I was an undergrad.  This article offers some practical things a person can do to hold onto a sense of self worth. http://crunkfeministcollective.wordpress.com/2011/08/25/back-to-school-beatitudes-10-academic-survival-tips/#comments

Not Reading What I Said I Would.

There is a need to change the list on the right side of this blog.  It has been changed. Some books were removed and some were added. It may change again because it has become a working list. There was a list put together at the beginning of the year, but you see, people are always trying to lead me into temptation and when it comes to books I generally follow. I have been distracted for the last ten years and I never read what I am supposed to.  Rather I read whatever I feel like at the moment.  As a result, I have read many many books not on the list. And am I the only one who reads several books at once?  I just can't help myself; there is so much good stuff out there. One of the novels I'm rereading is Julie Dash's Daughters Of The Dust .  (wasn't on original list)  It is the story of the Peazants, a family of former slaves who lived on a island off the Atlantic coast of South Carolina.  Part of the family migrates to the north, much like my family.   One of the the

The Book I have Owned The Longest and The Oldest Book I Own.

Image
The book I have owned the longest is the Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe .   I can't remember when or where it was bought, but my maiden name is on the first page.   I have been married over twenty-seven years so I'm guessing I have had it for about twenty-eight years.  My favorite in the book is the detective story "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" originally published in  1841 and considered the first detective story written in English.  Detective Fiction is a specific genre that consists of a crime or puzzle that needs solving, an investigator who can be professional or amateur, clear or unclear pertinent clues, and a denoment or gathering together of relevant facts that lead to the ultimate solving of the mystery.  My favorite detective is Sherlock Holmes who is a self-taught expert in crime detection.  Holmes and many other fictional investigators sometimes have an assistant/sidekick, such as the conventional Dr. Watson.   Some other detective fiction

Interesting Talk about the book The Help

The article is on root.com and was written by Jimi Izrael.  I have not read the book yet.  I am on a waiting list at the library.  When the dvd comes out, I will be renting it at the library too.  The comments are as interesting as the article. http://www.theroot.com/views/help-see-it-you-judge?page=0,0&wpisrc=root_lightbox

Water Pollution- an exhibition by Jaclyn Reidy

Opening Reception: Friday August 19, 2011 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. free and open to the public Exhibition Dates: Friday August 19th - Wednesday August 31st www.govst.edu/gallery regular gallery hours: Monday and Wednesday 1-5 p.m. Tuesday 1-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday 5-9 p.m. Artist Statement Water Pollution The images I create evolve from littered waste and debris that I have witnessed in waterways. Being drawn to water and its pristine blue hues in lakes and oceans, I chose to focus on water pollution because it is harmful to the natural resource itself as well as marine organisms and humans that consume those affected organisms as food. Water pollution also contaminates drinking water, which is essential for humans to thrive. From my observation of polluted waterways, I researched more in-depth information on water pollution as well as images of polluted water and marine organisms, both healthy and infected, from books and the internet. I use those images as references, an

A Book I Seriously Tried To Read But Was Not Able To Finish or Like. State of Fear by Michael Crichton

Eventually I finish almost of the books I start, probably because as years go by I become more aware of what I like, so what you're about to read is definitely a matter of my personal opinion which you will not and could not totally agree with.  When I pick a book out, I do feel a certain amount of disappointment in myself if I don't like it. For the most part I don't like popular fiction.  I don't try to read popular fiction anymore because I am a book snob:)  I admit it. Having said all of that one of my favorite writers is best selling popular fiction writer Michael Crichton.  I love his older novels.   A Case of Need  is excellent detective fiction in which a doctor has to solve a mystery that occurs at the hospital he works in, and Jurassic Park is one of the best suspense filled thrillers I ever read; the book is much better than the movie.  Crichton's Travels is a funny and wise autobiography about world travel and personal struggles.  But when I tried readi

I Can't Find The Book I Was Reading.

Image
Although it's probably right in front of my face, I don't feel like looking for it anymore.  So now I need to find something light but slightly exhilarating to read.  What shall it be? Judy's Journey   Lois Lenski Flat-Footed Truths: Telling Black Women's Lives   Patricia Bell-Scott with Juanita Johnson-Bailey Their Eyes Were Watching God   Zora Neale Hurston The Poisonwood Bible   Barbara Kingsolver Sherlock Holmes   Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Hercule Poirot's Early Cases   Agatha Christie Daughters of the Dust   Julie Dash All of these are possibilites because I've read them before and they are soothing to me like lavender incense and chocolate chip cookies.  Ya'll know about me and those cookies! I like the short stories because they don't obligate me to very much time, but the novels have some prose and familiar characters that I love. Tonight it will be Daughters of the Dust by Julie Dash.  Have a good evening everybody.  Peace.

Wild Rides: 12 Theme Park & Coaster Concepts

Image
By  Steph  in  Architecture & Design ,  Technology & Futurism ,  Urbanism Amusement parks offer an adrenaline-soaked escape from reality, transporting us into fantasy worlds where pretty much anything is possible – and sometimes, the concept art for a proposed theme park can be nearly as exciting as the park itself. These 12 concepts include eagerly awaited new theme parks expected to open soon, projects that have been shelved and incredibly imaginative ideas that could never actually exist. World of Warcraft & Starcraft-Themed Amusement Park (images via:  manaflask ) It’s not a joke: China really is building a World of Warcraft-themed amusement park (with a Starcraft section to boot). It’s called Joyland, and it’s under construction in the Wunjin district with an expected opening sometime this spring. For the time being, however, it’s still just a concept, with fantastical illustrations giving us an idea of what to expect. Vertical Theme Park for New York City (images via:

Pie in the Sky? Not in Dubai! 8 Mind-Blowing Projects

Image
By  Marc  in  Architecture & Design ,  Technology & Futurism ,  Travel & Places Dubai is one of the wealthiest of the 7 arab emirates, and it isn’t averse to funding projects that boggle the mind. Where else can one go skiing in a desert? Or buy an entire island in the shape of a continent? Lavish wealth and a willing-to-do-anything attitude has brought well-deserved fame to this gorgeous city. World Islands (Images via  dailymail ,  islands-guides ,  realestatewebmasters ) 2.5 miles off the coast of Dubai, there now resides an impressive archipelago of well over 100 small islands in the shape of the world’s continents. Despite incredible initial interest, there is as of yet, only one building on the islands (a show home). Despite allegations that the islands are sinking back into the ocean, the developers continue to remain hopeful that construction will continue. Ski Dubai (Images via  mountainyahoos ,  holidaydestinations4all ,  dubaiforums ,  skidubai ) Ski Dubai is an
