I'm not going to finish all the books I planned to read!

You see, it's like this; I have a habit of reading books that are not on my list.  As as direct result these books will have to pushed to 2012: African American Literature Beyond Race: An Alternative Reader  by Gene Andrew Jarrett.  This book is a compilation of short stories and excerpts from novels.  I have read some it but not all.  It is the first book I will finish in 2012. Twelve Steps To A Compassionate Life by Karen Armstrong.  The third chapter on self compassion said to not go forward reading until the concepts it taught were a part of real life.  Next year I will be ready to move on. As I Lay Dying William Faulkner Devil In A Blue Dress Walter Mosley   Free Enterprise Michelle Cliff The Warmth Of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson.  This recently came out in paperback so I might buy it.  I had to keep taking it back to the library.

I Can't Find The Book I Was Reading.

Although it's probably right in front of my face, I don't feel like looking for it anymore.  So now I need to find something light but slightly exhilarating to read.  What shall it be? Judy's Journey   Lois Lenski Flat-Footed Truths: Telling Black Women's Lives   Patricia Bell-Scott with Juanita Johnson-Bailey Their Eyes Were Watching God   Zora Neale Hurston The Poisonwood Bible   Barbara Kingsolver Sherlock Holmes   Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Hercule Poirot's Early Cases   Agatha Christie Daughters of the Dust   Julie Dash All of these are possibilites because I've read them before and they are soothing to me like lavender incense and chocolate chip cookies.  Ya'll know about me and those cookies! I like the short stories because they don't obligate me to very much time, but the novels have some prose and familiar characters that I love. Tonight it will be Daughters of the Dust by Julie Dash.  Have a good evening everybody....

All Mixed Up

Primed and prepared, I like to put myself into position to experience life from the perspective of someone else's thoughts and ideas.  But you see,  because I am deeply affected by what I read, I have to carefully choose which books I spend my time in. There are parts of "Beloved" by Toni Morrison that upset me so much that I ended up in bed with the covers over my head.  It helps to balance novels that stir up my grief with books that give me hope and make me laugh.  It has taken a while to understand what I need. I have to level my reading out with comedy, biography, satire, fantasy, mystery, travel books, and fairy tales.  A few of my favorites are Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal,"  "The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson, and "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston, though I still don't understand the meaning of the title to Hurston's book.   What I am trying to say is I have found...
